Use large shapes first

Start on plain paper with a pencil so you can adjust the proportions. A decorative skull can be symmetrical, exaggerated or intentionally uneven. Decide on the overall outline before adding small teeth, flowers or surface details.

Try six steps

  • Sketch a tall oval.
  • Narrow the lower portion into a jaw.
  • Mark a light vertical centerline.
  • Place two broad eye sockets.
  • Add a small nose and a simple teeth band.
  • Refine the outline and erase construction lines.

Change one feature at a time

Draw the same outline with round, angular and flower-framed eye shapes. Compare how the expression changes without calling one version historically authentic. Our printable outline is an original practice aid; the downloadable instructions come from the Spanish library and are labeled accordingly.
