Three details to record

Record the base material, the stated grade or composition, and the coating or decorative finish. A stainless steel base with a colored finish is different from solid sterling silver. A description that mentions only a silver tone leaves the composition unresolved.

Ask better comparison questions

  • Does the composition refer to the whole piece, the chain or just one component?
  • Is the dark area an intentional oxidized finish, paint or another treatment?
  • What do the manufacturer’s care instructions allow?
  • Is there documentation for any claimed skin suitability?

Know the limits of labels

A photograph cannot establish nickel release, resistance to wear or authenticity of a stamp. The Sheffield Assay Office reference explains precious-metal marking in its own jurisdiction. It does not certify Amazon products or replace information applicable to your purchase in the United States.
