Match the mold to the project
Read the permitted materials and processing conditions for the exact mold. A photograph of a finished chocolate, candle or resin object does not document compatibility. Check instructions for both the mold and the material you plan to put into it.
Compare useful dimensions
- Cavity size rather than just the outside block.
- Full shape, relief or multiple small cavities.
- Opening and documented release method.
- Permitted temperatures and cleaning.
- Food-contact documentation when used for food.
Keep the limits clear
AESAN explains a European food-contact framework, not US certification of a listed mold. This guide does not teach chemical casting or establish a process as safe from appearance. Do not reuse a mold for food after using it with resin or other craft chemicals.
A practical comparison worksheet
| Decision | Information to record | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Food project | Documented food contact and temperature limits | Use only for the permitted application |
| Craft project | Mold and material compatibility | Keep tools separate from food equipment |
| Scale | Cavity dimensions and number of parts | Exterior block size is not the final cast size |
Sources and method
Decalavera’s editorial criteria and examples use AI assistance and documentary checking. References support their specific cultural or technical context; they do not certify products or represent physical tests. Sources from other jurisdictions are not presented as US product certification.
